saved stories

Safed Stories is a private, five-day analog workshop week where participants visualize a personal experience, memory, or story through photography and film.

The project is a critical nod to digital (social) media, where images can be endlessly shared, modified, and disconnected from their creator.

Safed Stories consciously chooses analog work, slowing down, and setting boundaries. The final result is a short personal film (approx. 3 minutes) that is not screened publicly or shared online.

Each film is stored in a small physical safe that the participant takes home. Whatever is inside remains theirs.

“There was a moment when I realized I didn’t want to share something. Not because it was a secret, but because it was mine.”

There was a time when a memory naturally stayed our own. A photo was in a box. A letter in a drawer. A roll of film had to be developed before you knew what was on it.

Nowadays, an experience appears almost simultaneously with its publication. We experience something and share it. We think something and post it. We feel something and archive it in a cloud we don’t own.

What does it still mean to create something for yourself? That question is the starting point of Safed Stories.

Safed Stories is a five-day analog workshop week in an old sanatorium in the French Lower Vosges. A small group of up to eight participants visualize a personal memory through analog photography and film.

The goal isn’t to publish. Not to be seen. At the end of the week, each film is stored in a small metal safe.

What’s inside remains yours.

“We share almost everything. Images, thoughts, memories. Safed Stories is a five-day analog workshop week where you create something that doesn’t circulate.”

who is it for

Safed Stories is intended for culturally engaged adults who need depth and focus. For people who want to create without an audience and without pressure to perform. Safed Stories is not therapy, not a retreat, and not a traditional film course. It is an artistic workshop week with a clear framework and room for personal interpretation.

where

Safed Stories takes place at Sanaruska, a former sanatorium in Isches, located in the French Lower Vosges. The location—surrounded by forest, silence, and history—doesn’t function as a backdrop but as a fellow player.

That’s up to you. There is no obligation to share or explain everything.
